The Mekor Haim Choir, under the direction of Leonardo Mendonça, will perform a concert of Hebrew and Ladino songs at 12 noon on Sunday, September 6, 2026 in the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue in Porto as part of the celebration of the European Days of Jewish Culture.
The program reflects the choir’s commitment “to teach, learn, and perform Jewish liturgical, Sephardi, and Hebrew music for the education and enjoyment of its members and of the community at large” since its founding in October 2020.
The theme of this year’s celebration is Love. Jewish music reflects love in Jewish culture through songs of love of God, family love, love of the Sabbath, love of the Land of Israel, as well as romantic love
The program will include Shochant Basadeh (Love of the Land), Hallel (Psalm 117), Ana BeKorenu, and Yom Ze LeYisrael (Love of the Sabbath) by the Portuguese descendent Emmanuel Aguillar of London, England, Veshameru (Love of the Covenant) Tzadik K’Tamar Yifrach (Love of righteousness), and Ma Tovu (Love of the People of Israel) by Luis Lewandowski of Berlin, Germany, and La Rosa Enflorece (Romantic Love) in Ladino and Hebrew by Haim Efendi of Edirne, Turkey. We will also sing a traditional setting of Avinu Malkenu for the High Holidays.
All are welcome to attend the concert free of charge.
