This year, Porto's Jewish Community invited Amadeu Guerra and Rui Cardoso to the Simchat Torah party to dance with the community honoring the Hamas hostages, as the October 7 assault occurred directly on Simchat Torah in 5784, permanently transforming a day of dancing into a date associated with national mourning.
The celebration of Simchat Torah marks also a very special moment in Portugal's history. The Kadoorie synagogue congregation is poised to complete 11 consecutive years of uninterrupted minyan.
