On March 6, a monument was inaugurated in honor of Aristides de Sousa Mendes and the humanitarian act carried out by the Consul.
Paulo Catalino Ferraz, Mayor of Carregal do Sal, and Isabel Damasceno, President of CCDR Centro, unveiled the commemorative plaque placed beside the new monument, erected at the southern roundabout of Cabanas de Viriato.
The ceremony was witnessed by Cilene Lindinho, President of the Municipal Assembly of Carregal do Sal, members of the Municipal Executive, Nuno Seabra, President of the Parish Council of Cabanas de Viriato, guests, and locals who joined the inauguration. The event preceded a visit by the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg to the Aristides de Sousa Mendes Museum.
It was another significant moment in preserving the memory and the act of the Consul, who consciously and deliberately disobeyed due to moral imperatives.
