The Oporto Jewish Community published a video showing images from the European Day of Jewish Culture event which took place on Sunday 3 September.
The programme included visits to Kadoorie Synagogue (the largest in the Iberian Peninsula), namely areas such as the art gallery and the library, but also the Holocaust Museum and the Jewish Museum of Oporto. The aim was for people to become acquainted with the history, religion, laws, customs, principles, symbology and philosophy of the Jewish people.
The initiative was organised by the Jewish Community of Oporto in close cooperation with the European Association for the Preservation and Promotion of Jewish Culture and Heritage, B'nai B'rith Europe. the National Library of Israel and the European Jewish Association, which brings together Jewish communities from Portugal to Ukraine.
Commenting on this video, nonagenarian associate Eta Wright expressed her emotions: "It gives me enormous pleasure and a great sense of pride to watch and learn about the activities of the Jewish Community of Oporto. A completely new world from the times my father Paulo Presman was its President and my late husband Ronald Wright was the Secretary and Treasurer. May the Jewish Community of Oporto grow from strength to strength and be a source of pride for both Portugal and Israel."
The date is celebrated annually in the main cities of Europe on the first Sunday in September. This was the second year that the Jewish Community of Oporto joined the event, which was attended by thousands of people.
