When, in March 2017, the Porto-based historian Artur Villares published and distributed to embassies an edition, in English and Hebrew, of the book "The Jewish Sephardic Diaspora Through the Archives of the Jewish Community of Oporto", few could have imagined how important this book would be in the near future.

More than the history of the Iberian Sephardic diaspora, the book documented the 13 main lists of surnames that the Community used in its work of certifying the family origins of applicants interested in obtaining Portuguese nationality.

• Surnames of those sentenced by the Portuguese Inquisition;

• Surnames from Morocco and Gibraltar at the British Cemetery of Estrela (Lisbon);

• Surnames from Morocco and Gibraltar at the cemetery of Lisbon

• Surnames at the Jewish cemetery of Faro;

• Surnames from Morocco and Gibraltar in the Jewish communities of the Azores, particularly in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel (1834), Terceira, Angra do Heroísmo (1832) and Cidade da Horta, Faial (1850);

• Surnames from Tunis, Tunisia – Lists of Ketubot 17th and 18th centuries;

• Surnames of Jews who lived in Portugal in the 14th and 15th centuries;

• Surnames of Jews who belonged to the Portuguese synagogues of the Israeli community in the city of Edirne, Adrianopolis, in Turkey, the “Kahal Kadosh” Portugal and the “Kahal Kadosh” Évora;

• Surnames of Jews who belonged to the Portuguese synagogues of the Israeli community of the city of Smyrna (Izmir), in Turkey, the “Kahal Kadosh Portugal,” in the 19th and 20th centuries, and to the institution of “Dotar” the orphans of the Portuguese congregation of Smyrna, in the 17th and 18th centuries;

• Surnames of Jews from the city of Thessaloniki, who belonged to the Portuguese synagogues and institutions in existence in that city, such as the “Kahal Kadosh Portugal,” the “Kahal Kadosh Lisbon,” the “Kahal Kadosh Évora,” etc.;

• The most frequent Sephardic surnames in the Sephardic communities of Bulgaria;

• List of Portuguese Jewish surnames in the communities of Amsterdam, Hamburg, Livorno and London;

• Surnames of Jews from Livorno, found in documents from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Between 2020 and 2022, Portugal witnessed a "Palestinian question" from the socialist government, which rejected Israelis, much less Jews, and even less so if they were rich. The population of Israel was treated as "sellers of everything" and the Jewish Community of Porto (a world reference in the promotion of Jewish Culture) was reduced to an "Open Door" for illegal immigrants. In addition, the separation of powers proved to be a farce, and freedom of association, as well as religious freedom, were trampled upon. It got to the point where the synagogue was invaded by men of Albano Pinto and Luís Neves, who at the same time were persecuting Judge Ivo Rosa with the same "socialist methods."

The problem is that history always makes its way and tends to expose antisemitic schemes and those responsible for them to posterity. The accusations of "money and tricks" are always the same. Also constant is the Jewish Mazal. Jewish constellations are inescapable and always leave their mark on civilization. Even anti-Jewish catastrophes are generally full of both negative and positive lessons.

When the largest genocide of Jews since the Second World War occurred in 2023, the catastrophe was also reflected in Portugal. The Muslim Brotherhood terrorists, who lovingly manage movements like Hamas and corrupt politicians in Europe, were not content with killing people. They also took 250 trophies to the Gaza tunnels. The hostage crisis began. The problem for the Portuguese woke socialist system started that day.

About 10% of the victims taken to the Gaza tunnels were Portuguese nationals, while the remaining 90% generally had nationalities other than Israeli, as a result of a population of forced migrants who flocked to Israel after centuries of desperately crossing borders.

Given that the Jewish Community of Porto had been spat upon and disregarded by all the powers of Portugal – executive, legislative, media, and judicial – that Hamas "raffle" brought 25 Portuguese people whose origins could now be analyzed.

Ran Guili (great-grandson of Eduardo Nada, "protected Spaniard" in Alexandria), Ofer Kalderon (from a Greek Sephardic family from KK Portugal), Adina Moshe Galante (from a Turkish family from KK Portugal), Orin Bira Kasorlla and his daughter Tair Kasorlla (from a Paredes family from the former Yugoslavia), Gila Peled Cohen and his son Daniel (from a family from the "Portuguese Jewish community of Tunis"), Dror Or Ermoza (from an Ottoman family who spoke Ladino and inspired the series "The Beautiful Queen of Jerusalem"), Idan Shtivi (from the Benveniste family of Bulgarian origin), Ariel Cunio and his brother David Cunio (from a Turkish Sephardic family), Or Levy (from a Turkish Sephardic family), Gilad Ben-Yehuda (from a Turkish Sephardic family), Tsachi Idan Eini and his daughter Maayan Idan (from a Turkish and Egyptian Sephardic family), Moshe "Moshiko" Saadyan (from a Turkish and Moroccan Sephardic family), Yossi Sharabi (from a Moroccan Sephardic family surnamed Turgeman), Dorin Atias (from an Ottoman and Moroccan Sephardic family), Liraz Assulin Shitrit (from a Moroccan Sephardic family), Nevo Arad Edry (from a Moroccan Sephardic family), Eli Sharabi (from a Moroccan Sephardic family surnamed Turgeman), Omer Shem Tov (from a Moroccan Sephardic family), Segev Halfon (from Moroccan and Tunisian Sephardic family), Ravid Katz (from Bulgarian Sephardic family), and Rotem Neumann Kadosh (also from Balkan Sephardic family).

These stories can be replicated to encompass tens of thousands of people certified under the same circumstances. The few cases in the East were certified by Chabad Lubavitch. Family names and family memory were the basic criteria required by the legislation. The community gave its opinion, the Register Office gave its opinion, the government decided. Game over.
