José Saramago was a Portuguese journalist, writer and influencer whose staunch communist ideology remains deeply significant today across Portuguese culture, media, and politics. Broad sectors of the current mainstream elites and state workers still regard him as a "monumental figure" whose "humanitarianism, and defense of "human rights" remain an enduring inspiration.
During a visit to the West Bank in 2002, Saramago accused the Jewish people of acting as "rentiers of the Holocaust" and meaning they profit from its memory. Therefore, everything was "business" for Israeli Jews, even the Holocaust.
Saramago stated that the Israeli public and its army carried a sense of impunity. He condemned them for turning a blind eye and failing to stop the suffering of the Palestinian people. The Israeli government and fellow writers like Amos Oz, condemned those statements as "moral blindness".
Jews have loved their God since Mount Sinai. However, Saramago harshly and publicly criticized the Torah, describing it as "a manual of bad morals" and "a catalogue of cruelty and of what’s worst in human nature". In his book Cain, he portrays God as a "malicious tyrant", a "bloodily capricious" ruler, and an egomaniac who is directly responsible for the misery of humanity. He also cited the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah as clear evidence of God's cruelty. He argued that God showed unparalleled cruelty by arbitrarily accepting Abel's offering and rejecting Cain's.
Saramago previous work, The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, was equally controversial for its biting reinterpretation of the New Testament God, cementing his legacy as a fierce literary critic of organized religion.
Moral freedom is prohibited in Judaism and Christianity. Lifelong communist, as he described himself as a "hormonal communist," even when commenting the former communist regimes, Saramago permanently defended eroticism as "a powerful force for human liberation" and "breaking down oppressive societal rule".
Before achieving international literary fame later in life, he served as a prominent journalist and assistant director for major newspapers such as Diário de Lisboa and Diário de Notícias. He loved what he called "Freedom" for himself and his left-wing political supporters. He is accused of playing a key role in the firing of two dozen journalists at the Lisbon newspaper Diário de Notícias (DN) during the Portuguese Revolution in 1975.
Since Portugal was founded and developed by Jews and Christians, it is not clear how a communist became an ideologue for the entire country. Saramago frequently criticized the history of Portugal. He used his writing and public platform to challenge the idealized, heroic versions of the nation’s past, particularly those tied to the Portuguese Empire, the Catholic Church, and the Age of Discovery
The Corrupt Socialist "Open Door" Operation
Accusations from the Jewish Community of Porto on a "Palestinian question" by the leftist government and media followed the Soviet anti-Semitic model find strong corroboration in the doctrine of the "ideologue" Saramago who hated the Jews, their God, their Jewish state, and even its population, including those of Portuguese origin. He even used the phrase "Nazi Jews" (or "judeus nazistas") to describe Israelis.
Democratic Rule of Law, Separation of Powers, Fight against Discrimination. All of this exists in the Portuguese laws. Yet, the legal existence of something, and its real existence, are different matters. In real life, the following happened: The socialist government planted a fake news story in a newspaper (December 19, 2021); The government published a decree usurping the functions of parliament (December 23, 2021); The government sent that fake news to individuals it appointed to the public prosecutor's office (November 28, 2021); A synagogue was illegally invaded (March 11, 2022). The Jewish community of Porto calls this a "Corrupt State" and promises there will be consequences.
This story is much more interesting than it might seem at first glance. The leftist Portuguese government and its media found Leiva da Rocha their favorite target, falsely accusing him of having financed the Porto Holocaust museum whose work they despised. Not by chance, Rocha was a rich man. In the 1940’s, the Soviets had already insulted and stolen the entire fortune of his Lithuanian grandfather Nachman, but the new ones wanted to do the same to his grandson. Saramago was against the rise of billionaire businessmen, especially in the former Soviet homeland, as he was a lifelong Marxist and a staunch critic of "capitalism". He consistently argued that extreme wealth concentration, corporate power, and neoliberal policies were destructive to "human rights and democracy".
"Human Rights" for whom?
The José Saramago Foundation, based in Lisbon's historic Casa dos Bicos, acts as a major cultural hub dedicated to preserving his "Legacy" and promoting the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights".
In 2023, the Portuguese's largest synagogue was graffitied with Apartheid inscriptions. No government official commented on the event – thus condoning the crime. In the meantime, Hamas perpetrated the largest massacre of Jews since World War II. Yet, the Saramago system's "commentators" bared their teeth. Miguel Tavares was just one sad example. "Israel voluntarily sacrificed 1,200 of its citizens to carry out the massacre it is carrying out in Gaza," "This will only end when Israel achieves a final solution," "The entire people of Israel, or almost all of them, are in solidarity with them, in solidarity with a government of criminals."
In 2024, Jewish businessmen from Porto were listed in national newspapers and targeted by demonstrations against "Zionist capital," with slogans such as "We don't want to be tenants of murderous Zionists," "Neither Haifa nor Boavista," "Neither bombs in Palestine, nor evictions in Porto." Yet, no government official commented on what happened, thus condoning the crime that occurred.
In 2025, the Palestinian embassy was inaugurated in Lisbon. The laws applicable to embassies are those of the countries to which they pertain, so in the case of Palestine, the laws are those of Hamas and Islamic Jihad. The state of Israel does not appear on the map of the Middle East displayed on the wall of this "embassy".
