PSD and CIP/CJP, opposing strategies on Youtube

The stark contrast in YouTube metrics between the Portuguese Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Jewish Community of Oporto (CIP/CJP) highlights a fundamental difference in content strategy, audience reach, and how the YouTube algorithm rewards engagement.

The comparison between the two channels is not easy to make, firstly due to the fact that the PSD started its channel 14 years before the CIP/CJP channel. Still, there are interesting numbers that deserve analysis and conclusions. As of August 2026, the official statistics for both YouTube channels of Social Democratic Party and the Oporto Jewish Community are as follows:

- PSD (Social Democratic Party) YouTube Channel, under the name PSDTV, Total views, 8,785,334, 12,808 videos, average views per video: 685. Channel Start Date: 22 October 2007

- CIP/CJP (Jewish Community of Oporto) YouTube Channel, 3,308,124 views, 42 videos, Average per video: 78,764. Channel Start Date: 22 May 2021.

With over 12,000 videos, PSD treats YouTube as an archive. The channel is flooded with press conferences, campaign snippets, and political broadcasts. This highly transactional, fast-paced content gets stale quickly, resulting in very low average views (685) once a specific election cycle or news cycle ends. Political clips are short-lived. A speech from 2012 has virtually zero replay value today, dragging down PSD's historical averages.

While PSD has a broader real-world presence in Portugal, CIP/CJP’s channel heavily outperforms it on a per-video basis due to several structural issues. PSD’s content is almost exclusively relevant to Portuguese voters. The potential audience is capped by Portugal's population and those interested in day-to-day Portuguese legislative politics. In turn, CIP/CJP creates content aimed at a global diaspora. Their videos attract views from millions of people worldwide interested in Jewish history. Their scope is international, vastly expanding their potential view count.

With only 42 videos since 2021, CIP/CJP focuses on high-production-value content. They have produced full-length historical films and documentaries (such as 1618 or The Light of Judah). These high-budget productions are entered into international film festivals and widely promoted, generating viral, long-tail traffic. CIP/CJP’s historical documentaries and cultural features are evergreen; they remain relevant for years, consistently accumulating views over time.

In addition, YouTube's algorithm rewards high audience retention and average watch time. Users clicking on a high-quality 40-minute historical film will spend significantly more time on the platform than someone clicking on a 2-minute political statement, prompting YouTube to recommend CIP/CJP's videos to broader audiences.

To make the math more difficult

- CCB Belém Cultural Center YouTube Channel, 474 736 views, 799 videos, Average per video: 594. Channel Start Date: 18 May 2011.

The Belém Cultural Center (CCB) is one of the largest and most significant Portuguese organizations dedicated to culture. It is the largest building with cultural facilities in Portugal. It spans a construction area of roughly 97,000 to 140,000 square meters, built originally to host the Portuguese presidency of the European Union in 1992. It operates as a micro-city within Lisbon. It features internal streets, plazas, shops, restaurants, and terraces that connect the public directly with the arts. The complex houses World-Class Artistic Venues, a high-tech Congress and Conference Centre, a Performing Arts Centre featuring a Main Auditorium that seats 1,500 people, and an Exhibition Centre.
CCB is home to MAC/CCB (Museum of Contemporary Art and Architecture Centre). The museum safeguards the renowned Berardo Collection, the Ellipse Collection, and the Teixeira de Freitas Collection, making it the most important international modern and contemporary art assembly in Portugal. The institution organizes a non-stop, year-round program covering classical music, jazz, theater, dance, opera, literature, cinema, and architecture. It also plays host to major country-wide events.

Despite all this apparent grandeur, the CCB YouTube channel is far inferior to the CIP/CJP YouTube channel. Launched a decade earlier (May 2011) than the CIP/CJP channel (May 2021), the CCB channel has significantly fewer views (474,736 compared to 3,308,124 for CIP/CJP) and a low average number of views per video (594 compared to 78,764 per video for CIP/CJP).
