Portuguese Dreyfus's granddaughter would make her grandfather proud

Captain Barros Basto was wrongfully stripped of his military rank and pension by the Portuguese state in 1937 due to antisemitic discrimination—an action driven by anonymous, malicious letters targeting his Jewish activism. The most tragic result was assisted dying in the community for eighty years.

In the 21st century, Isabel Barros Lopes has followed in her grandfather Captain Artur Carlos de Barros Basto's footsteps by serving as a prominent leader in the Jewish Community of Porto and campaigning to clear his name and rebirth the congregation he founded in 1923. She serves as the vice president of the Jewish Community of Porto and feels a deep personal and moral debt to her grandfather, grandmother, and mother, who carried the burden of his persecution without succumbing to bitterness.

Isabel Barros Lopes has been directly following in the footsteps of her grandfather, the "Portuguese Dreyfus", by leading the revival of the Jewish community of Porto and fiercely defending his legacy. Given the community's profound transformation into a major religious and cultural hub, Barros Basto would undoubtedly be exceptionally proud of her work.

When Captain Barros Basto founded the modern Jewish Community of Porto, he dreamed of building a vibrant home for returning Jews, constructing the historic Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue. His granddaughter helped spearhead an extraordinary renaissance.

Today, the Porto community has grown to over 1,500 members. Under her leadership, the community has built a cemetery and a massive religious and cultural footprint, including a Jewish Museum and a Holocaust Museum that educates thousands of local school children to combat antisemitism.

In recent years, the Porto Jewish community has faced fresh political pushback surrounding Portuguese Sephardic citizenship laws. Isabel Lopes has courageously drawn a direct parallel to her grandfather's plight, noting that just as anonymous slander was used to destroy his reputation in the 1930s, modern baseless attacks are used to target Jewish leadership today.

Her resilience in standing up against state-level pressure mirrors the exact fortitude her grandfather showed nearly a century ago. She has also spent decades continuing the legal battle initiated by her mother and grandmother to clear his name.

Her relentless advocacy achieved a historic milestone when the Portuguese Parliament officially rehabilitated his memory. She has pushed the fight further to secure full posthumous reinstatement into the army and an official state apology.
