The “Hebrew Bible of Moura” will be the subject of a lecture presented by Professor Tiago Moita as part of the 24th edition of Heritage Week, organized by the Municipality of Moura from May 18 to 24.
Produced in 1470 by Samuel ben Abraham Altires, the illuminated manuscript was commissioned by the merchant Isaac Gabay and is considered one of the most important testimonies to the Jewish presence in the Alentejo region during the 15th century. The work stands out for the artistic richness of its illuminations and its Mudéjar style, marked by Jewish, Christian and Islamic cultural influences.
The Hebrew Bible of Moura is frequently referenced in studies dedicated to the production of Hebrew manuscripts in the Iberian Peninsula and is regarded as a rare example of the intense Jewish cultural activity that existed in Portugal before the expulsion of the Jews.
During the lecture, Professor Tiago Moita is expected to address the historical, artistic and heritage value of the manuscript, as well as the importance of preserving this cultural legacy. The researcher has also drawn attention to the fact that many Portuguese Hebrew manuscripts from this period are currently held abroad.
