It was not a normal day at the cemetery of the Porto Jewish community, as many interested people visited the space to pray in front of the memorial to the victims of October 7th in Israel. It honors those killed, serving as a symbol of Jewish memory and solidarity.
The memorial was officially unveiled on March 12, 2024 by international rabbis. The monument stands as a testament to the resilience of the Jewish people.
The cemetery is the first since 1497, when the previous one was destroyed following the edict of King Manuel I. The grounds are named after Isaac Aboab, the last gaon of Castile, who fled the Spanish expulsion to live and die in Porto, though the original destruction of Jewish sites erased the trace of his actual burial location.
The Isaac Aboab cemetery is located roughly 8 kilometers from Porto’s center. To prevent vandalism, the community keeps the exact address private.
