With one week left in the month of Av, the Porto Jewish Community prepares to enter Elul, as the ultimate time for spiritual alignment. The month of Tishrei will follow, with which the congregation will have completed eleven consecutive years with minyan and will then begin the journey of the twelfth.
The famous metaphor by the Chabad Lubavitch founder Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi of blessed memory - "The King is in the Field" - is deeply rooted in Kabbalistic thought. The Divine presence descends into the physical world (the "field") and anyone can approach the Divine without spiritual intermediaries, complex rituals, or feelings of unworthiness. The entire spiritual work of Elul is internal, focusing on self-refinement and discovering the divine spark within.
Elul provides the specific cosmic frequency needed to dismantle the energetic blockages (Klipot) that distort soul's light, rewinding personal spiritual timeline to erase the energetic imprint of past mistakes. From a Kabbalistic perspective, it is the ultimate time for spiritual alignment, serving as the bridge between cosmic judgment and divine mercy. It is viewed not just as a time for behavioral review, but as a metaphysical window where the spiritual universe rearranges to make closeness with the Divine effortless.
In Kabbalah, God interacts with the universe through ten spiritual channels called Sefirot. Throughout most of the year, the channel of Malchut (Kingship) operates with strict boundaries and justice. However, during Elul, the higher light of Chesed (Loving-kindness) and Rachamim (Mercy) flows downwards without restriction. This provides humanity with a rare spiritual shield, softening the upcoming cosmic judgments of Rosh Hashanah.
