Jared Kushner is a major supporter and active affiliate of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, as his paternal grandparents, Reichel and Joseph, were from Navahrudak, Belarus, that is the historical birthplace of the Chabad movement, serving as its cradle and intellectual center for over a century before shifting to Russia. Many foundational Chabad stories and leaders are tied to Belarusian towns such as Liozna, Liadi, Shklov, and Babruysk. The movement's founder, Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, developed the Chabad philosophy in Belarusian villages and held court there, making the region foundational to the group’s identity.
While the town of Lubavitch is currently in Russia, it was situated in the Mogilev Governorate of the Russian Empire (now part of the Belarusian border area). It served as the center of Chabad Chassidus for 102 years (1813–1916).
