Israel’s ambassador to Portugal, Oren Rozenblat, spoke out in a video against the participation of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) in Festa do Avante!, an annual event organized by the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), scheduled to take place from September 4 to 6 in the municipality of Seixal.
The presence of the terrorist group at the communist festival has drawn attention due to the organization’s history and its inclusion on the European Union’s list of terrorist organizations.
The PFLP’s History
Founded in 1967 in the aftermath of the Six-Day War, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine is a terrorist organization with a long history of armed operations.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine was involved in several aircraft hijackings and other operations targeting Israeli interests. Among the best-known episodes was the wave of hijackings in September 1970, which involved the diversion of several aircraft.
Later, the PFLP also claimed responsibility for operations targeting Israeli interests. In 2001, the group claimed responsibility for the assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze’evi. The organization was also involved in attacks during the Second Intifada and, according to recent sources, has claimed responsibility for other armed operations against Israel.
