Iberian Judaism under siege

The statue of Maimonides in Córdoba, Spain, was vandalized with a spray-painted Nazi swastika. Spain’s Policía Nacional (National Police) has launched an investigation and is treating the vandalism as a hate crime. They know the tactic is used by fascists and communists. The former because they adore Hitler. The communists because they hate Jews and fascists, and the swastika is a good way for placing the last ones as suspects.

The monument sits in the Plaza de Tiberíades, located in the heart of Córdoba's historic Jewish Quarter (Judería). The antisemitic graffiti was discovered on the morning of Saturday, August 1, 2026. Municipal workers immediately covered the graffiti with a temporary sign. A specialized city restoration team was dispatched to carefully remove the spray paint from the delicate stone base without damaging the 1964 monument.

Israeli news sources like Ynetnews and The Times of Israel immediately amplified the story. They highlighted that the swastika was not a random act of property damage, but a deliberate assault directly targeting Jewish memory and heritage in Europe. Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, known as the Rambam is one of the most respected historical figures in the global Jewish community.

The Jewish Community of Barcelona and the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain released statements noting that defacing the statue of one of the world's most foundational Sephardic thinkers is an assault on "our shared history, on the Golden Age... and on the values of knowledge, freedom, and coexistence."

The European Jewish Association and the European Jewish Congress issued statements emphasizing that the attack targets not just Jewish people, but Jewish memory and culture. They urged authorities to ensure the protection of historical Jewish sites across Europe.

Public discourse noted the profound historical irony of the event. Maimonides' own family was forced to flee Córdoba nearly 900 years ago under religious persecution; observers lamented that his memory is still being targeted by hate in his hometown today.

It is no coincidence that yesterday, the most important leader of the Spanish Jewish community, David Hatchwell Altaras, was described in the Spanish political mainstream as a "Jewish oligarch" who supports what they call the far-right.

Spain is today a woke country that rejects Jews. Its doors are open to criminals, the poor and radical Muslims. The Donald Trump administration labeled the country a "wasted cause," a "lost cause," while ordering a temporary freeze on all U.S. trade and official visits.

In turn, Israeli officials accuse Spain of supporting terrorism. In April 2026, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the immediate removal of Spanish representatives from the Civil-Military Coordination Centre (CMCC), the international hub overseeing Gaza ceasefire monitoring and humanitarian aid.

Following a mass influx of roughly 50,000 migrants into the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta, Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon publicly demanded Spain explain to the world why it still maintains "colonial enclaves in Africa".
