The Jewish Community of Porto is a few weeks away from celebrating its uninterrupted minyan for eleven consecutive years, and will then begin the journey to complete its twelfth, while at the same time is maintaining its position as a world leader in the promotion of Jewish culture, and as a national Portuguese leader in both Holocaust education and the defense of Jewish human rights.
In Jewish tradition, the Shechinah (the Divine Presence) is believed to bring tangible, universal blessings to the surrounding non-Jewish environment because God’s abundance (shefa) overflows from the sacred collective into the broader world. When a minyan gathers in the Diaspora, they act as a spiritual conduit, drawing divine protection, peace, and prosperity that naturally extends to the very city and country hosting them.
The Community minyan, which takes place in two synagogues at the same time, is a positive factor for Portugal. The support that senators from the real country give to the Community increases month by month. Today, no one wants to have their name exposed to history for being the partner of those who years ago tried to destroy Jewish life in the city, and worse, who failed miserably. The current strength of the Community represents a bucket of excrement falling on their senseless heads.
