The Lisbon Jewish Community (CIL) announced on Sunday, September 6, that Chief Rabbi Pierpaolo Pinhas Punturello will step down from his position at the end of this month.
The announcement came after Punturello informed the CIL that he will take on a new position in the field of education.
“We obviously regret that his service to our Community will come to an end at the end of this month, but we wish our still Chief Rabbi every success in the professional challenge that lies ahead,” the CIL said.
The community also announced that it will continue to rely on Rabbi Yaakov Moreira during the transition period, until the position of Chief Rabbi is filled.
Punturello assumed the position of Chief Rabbi of the Lisbon Jewish Community in February this year, remaining in the role for several months before announcing his departure.
