Tensions erupt at housing protest in Lisbon after man displays Israeli flag

A tense moment unfolded on Wednesday evening (21) during a protest calling for better housing conditions in Rossio Square, Lisbon. A man identified at the scene as a priest displayed an Israeli flag amid the demonstration, which also featured numerous Palestinian flags.

The man's presence triggered insults, heated arguments and physical altercations with some protesters. As tensions escalated, officers from Portugal's Public Security Police (PSP) intervened to remove him from the area and escort him to a safer location near the Rossio metro station.

During the escort, as he reached the area around the station, the man was hit by jets of water thrown by protesters. Police continued to escort him and temporarily restricted access to the station in an attempt to prevent protesters from following him.

The protest was primarily focused on demands for better access to housing and improved living conditions in Lisbon. However, the demonstration also incorporated symbols and messages related to the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

The Palestinian cause at protests

The presence of Palestinian flags at social movement demonstrations has become increasingly common in Portugal since the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. The issue has taken on a particularly sensitive dimension following previous incidents involving pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Portugal.

In Porto, a similar protest held in the past to oppose rising housing costs reportedly included signs displaying antisemitic slogans.
