Rua da Judiaria, in Lisbon, was vandalized with antisemitic graffiti on Monday, May 12. The messages included death threats against Israelis and references expressing support for Hamas. In a statement shared on social media, the Jewish Cultural Center: Rua da Judiaria said the incident went far beyond the boundaries of political protest.
“This is not protest. It is intimidation, vandalism, and the normalization of hatred against Jews and Israelis,” the institution stated.
In a separate statement, the Israeli Embassy in Portugal condemned the act as hate speech and incitement to violence.
“Calls for the murder of Israelis, the destruction of the State of Israel, and support for the terrorist organization Hamas are not political criticism — they are dangerous hate speech that constitutes direct incitement to violence and terrorism in the heart of the Portuguese capital,” the embassy said.
The embassy also urged the Portuguese government, the Lisbon City Council, and law enforcement authorities to publicly and unequivocally condemn the incident, bring those responsible to justice, and take measures to prevent similar acts from happening again.
So far, no information has been released regarding suspects or arrests connected to the case.
