Portuguese Minister of Justice presented with 10 questions about the Collective for the Liberation of Palestine

On June 19, 2026, the Portuguese National Counter-Terrorism Unit conducted searches targeting members of a group called the Collective for the Liberation of Palestine. The individuals involved are under investigation for suspected criminal association, public instigation to commit a crime, public defense/apology for a crime, qualified property damage, and offenses against a collective entity.

In Portugal, the Collective for the Liberation of Palestine operated openly for years as part of a broad Portuguese movement. While mainstream Portuguese political and media discourse historically supports the right to Palestinian self-determination, these recent police actions indicate that authorities are investigating the group's specific, alleged operational tactics rather than their political platform.

The vague statement from the authorities is understandable, given that the case is under judicial secrecy. However, the Jewish Community of Porto has already informed the Minister of Justice that it will insist on clarification of the following questions:

1. Does the group now under suspicion have relationships and contacts with active figures in politics and the media in Portugal? If so, with whom, for what purpose, and what exchanges existed?

2. What are the methods of financing this group? Specifically, where do the funds come from?

3. Was the group involved in the attack that defaced the facade of the central synagogue in Porto on October 10, 2023, with Apartheid inscriptions?

4. Was the group involved in the demonstration that took place in Porto on January 28, 2024, where posters and slogans such as "Neither Haifa nor Boavista," "We don't want to be tenants of Zionist murderers," and "Neither bombs in Palestine nor evictions in Porto" were displayed?

5. Was the group involved in the publication, in the Portuguese newspaper EsquerdaNet, on January 30, 2024, of a list with the names of Jews from Porto and their companies?

6. Was the group involved in the disturbances and attacks that occurred at the São Jorge Cinema in Lisbon during the celebrations of the 76th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel, events that took place on May 22, 2024?

7. Was the group involved in the attempted poisoning of Israeli Jews at the Boom Festival, as reported by a witness to The Jerusalem Post on June 9, 2025?

8. Does the group maintain relations with the Hamas embassy in Lisbon, inaugurated on October 31, 2025?

9. Was this group involved in preparing terrorist attacks against Jewish/Israeli targets in Portugal, or other European countries (Greek intelligence report dated June 9, 2026)?

10. Did the group have plans to attack institutions of the Jewish Community of Porto, specifically the Kadoorie synagogue, the Jewish museum, and the Holocaust museum?

Annual studies by Tel Aviv University, confirms that indifference to minor or non-violent offenses often serves as a precursor to more serious and widespread hate crimes. When authorities and states display permissiveness towards low-level antisemitic acts, it signals to extremists that targeting Jewish communities carries few consequences. This normalization creates a permissive environment that emboldens perpetrators, often leading to a spike in both the frequency and severity of violent attacks.

The Anti-Defamation League and the Community Security Trust consistently report that failing to curb initial incidents frequently paves the way for further escalations against Jewish institutions and individuals.
