The Chega Parliamentary Group has submitted a motion of condemnation to the Assembly of the Republic following Iran’s ballistic missile attack against Israel on Sunday, June 7.
In the parliamentary initiative, the party argues that responsibility for the escalation of tensions in the Middle East lies entirely with the Iranian regime.
“The new phase of escalation, for which responsibility lies exclusively with Tehran, casts a shadow over the ongoing peace process and threatens to return the Middle East to large-scale conflict. Confronted with the provocations of the Islamic Republic, the State of Israel clearly has the right to respond and to defend its sovereignty, security, and population”, the party stated.
Chega also warned that Portugal should keep a close watch on the Iranian theocracy, whose actions have significant repercussions for the global economy.
“Portugal cannot but view these developments in the Middle East with the utmost concern. A further deterioration of the crisis would have deleterious consequences for the Portuguese, European, and global economies. In the face of the Iranian theocracy’s aggressive course, Lisbon’s position can only be one of strict solidarity with the democratic and allied nation that is Israel.” it added.
The President of the Jewish Community of Porto, Gabriel Senderowicz, also reacted to the attack, criticizing Iran’s actions in the region.
“The June 7 missile attack by Iran once again highlights a fundamental distinction that is too often blurred in public debate: Israel directs its military operations against military and terrorist targets, whereas terrorist organisations and their sponsors deliberately target civilian populations. At moments such as these, it is essential to maintain moral clarity and resist the false equivalences that are too often promoted in the international media, as though a democratic nation defending its citizens were morally equivalent to the terrorist perpetrators of the October 7 massacre”, he said.
The motion presented by Chega seeks formal parliamentary condemnation of the Iranian attack and calls for Portugal to reinforce its solidarity with Israel amid increasing instability in the Middle East.
