On June 1, the Chabad community in Portugal experienced a moment of great joy with the celebration of the bris of the newborn son of Rabbi Menachem and Chana Wagner, who lead Chabad of the Algarve.
The ceremony was marked by emotion, community unity, and profound spiritual meaning, bringing together members of the local Jewish community around one of the most important rituals in Judaism, symbolizing the continuity of the Jewish people and the renewal of the covenant with tradition.
The date, 16 Sivan, adds an even deeper layer of significance to the occasion, as it coincides with the day the Lubavitcher Rebbe and the Rebbetzin were in Portugal in 1941. During that historic visit, the Rebbe wrote a profound teaching on the Torah, interpreting the Talmudic reference to “lost fish” as a metaphor for the loss of awareness of God’s presence in the world.
This coincidence of dates gave the event a unique historical and spiritual dimension, reinforcing the continuity of the Jewish mission in Portugal and the connection between generations.
