The Argentine Ambassador to Portugal, Federico Barttfeld, held a meeting with institutional representatives and members of the Jewish community in Portugal to present the priorities of Argentina’s presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).
The meeting was attended by Ambassador Maria de Fátima Mendes, Portugal’s representative to the IHRA; Ambassador Ana Paula Zacarias, Director of the Diplomatic Institute; João Taborda da Gama, national coordinator of the European strategy to combat antisemitism and promote Jewish life; Oren Rozenblat, Ambassador of Israel to Portugal; Gabriel Senderowicz, President of the Jewish Community of Porto; and Ester Bekerman Carneiro, Vice-President of the Jewish Community of Lisbon.
The IHRA presidency rotates among member countries. In 2026, Argentina holds the presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), leading the definition of priorities and coordinating international initiatives aimed at preserving the memory of the Holocaust and combating antisemitism.
Recently, another significant development took place in Portugal: the Jewish Community of Porto and the European Jewish Association (EJA) welcomed the adoption by Fernando Pessoa University of the IHRA definition of antisemitism. The decision followed a meeting with the university’s president, Professor Salvato Trigo, making it the first Portuguese university to formally adopt this definition.
