The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum has launched a new online tool that enables research into information about Auschwitz victims, as well as the transports that brought prisoners to the camp.
The archive contains data on 265,702 victims and 1,187 transports, based on approximately 1 million documents. "Restoring and presenting the identities of victims of Auschwitz is an extremely important part of our mission. The SS men stripped the victims of their humanity, but also – by destroying the evidence of crimes – they tried to erase their identities. For the camp administration, victims were just numbers. For us, they all had their own name, face, and history," said the Museum Director, Dr. Piotr M. A. Cywiński.
The new website is the result of many years of work by archivists and historians, as well as the collaboration of university students and volunteers who interned at the Memorial. The online tool is now live, although it is not yet fully updated.
