The tribute marks 71 years since the death of the diplomat who saved thousands of lives during World War II.
On April 3, 2025, the Funchal City Council paid tribute to diplomat Aristides de Sousa Mendes with the unveiling of a bust at the Miradouro do Socorro — a location chosen for its symbolic proximity to the Jewish Cemetery of Funchal and the city's historical role in welcoming Jewish refugees during World War II.
The ceremony highlighted the courage and humanity of the “Consul of Bordeaux,” who, in 1940, defied orders from the Salazar regime and issued thousands of visas to refugees fleeing Nazi occupation.
The event was attended by the President and Vice-President of the Funchal City Council, Cristina Pedra and Bruno Pereira, respectively, as well as the President of the Municipal Assembly, José Luís Nunes, the Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture, Eduardo Jesus, municipal deputies, parish council presidents, Aristides de Sousa Mendes’ great-grandson, Francisco de Sousa Mendes, and other distinguished guests.
