April, 2026. Social media and alternative media outlets are now spreading, totally out of context, statements made by the US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth eight years ago, when he referred to the historical miracles of Jewish history and that it would not be surprising if the Third Temple were to exist one day.
The true Statement: "There's no reason why the miracle of the re-establishment of the temple on the Temple Mount is not possible," Hegseth said, adding that people "don't know how it would happen" but believed it was possible. He spoke about that theoretical possibility during a 2018 speech in an Arutz Sheva (Israel National News) conference in Jerusalem.
At the time, he suggested that building a Jewish temple on the Temple Mount was a "miracle" that could happen, similar to other milestones in Israeli history, as he described 1917, 1948, 1967, and 2017 (the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital) as a series of miracles, suggesting the rebuilding of the temple could be the next step. He also emphasized that "facts and activities on the ground truly matter" and encouraged support for Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria (the West Bank).
These Hegseth's comments surfaced now, highlighting his strong views on Jewish historical and spiritual claims to the Temple Mount. Hegseth, nominated by Donald Trump as Secretary of Defense, is a proponent of strong pro-Israel credentials based on his background,
Jerusalem Temple: A Temple for all humanity
The Temple of Jerusalem was intended to be a "house of prayer for all nations" (Isaiah 56:7), and historically it included non-Jews. While it was the central sanctuary for Jewish covenantal worship, it functioned as a "universal" site where foreign rulers and visitors acknowledged the God of Israel. So the Temple always held a dual significance: it was the national, holy site for Jews, but it also functioned as a global spiritual center, attracting recognition and pilgrims from various nations
The Judeo-Christian Civilization
Pete Hegseth is as a devout Christian closely associated with a specific, conservative branch of evangelical Christianity known as the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches. He believes that the Judeo-Christian Civilization that once existed in Europe and Eurasia, and which extended to Africa, America, and many other places, is associated both with the Torah, and with the city of Jerusalem, and also with the centuries-long joint work between Jews and Christians.
The Trump administration includes several personalities besides Hegseth who believe that it is more than possible to regenerate the ancient Judeo-Christian Civilization in modernity. Natural rights must be ensured through international law. Man is indeed man, woman is indeed woman, family is indeed family, and God is indeed God.
Currently, Jews and Christians are increasingly being rejected as anachronistic around the liberal world. Jewish human rights, like Christian human rights, are increasingly being denied, both individually and collectively. However, the only normality that history records is the change of paradigm, generation by generation. In Israel, the US and Eurasia, many believe that a sweeping change will be made soon to the dominant axiology and that the reconstruction of the Temple will be part of this necessary shift.
