United Nations chief decries antisemitism

At a service commemorating victims of the Nazi Holocaust, Antonio Guterres, the United Nations' Secretary-General decried the resurgence of antisemitism. Around the world, he said, there are conspiracy theories devolving into “heinous antisemitic tropes", especially on the internet. The rise in antisemitism - “the oldest form of hate and prejudice” - has seen new reports of verbal abuse, physical attacks, the desecration of Jewish cemeteries, synagogues vandalised, and last week the hostage-taking of Beth Israel Congregation in Colleyville.

For International Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January, Guterres urges all States to tackle the rising Antisemitism, and curb the continued attacks targeting the lives, honor and safety of Jews around the world. Today, 77 years after the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Antisemitism is still a worrying trend and its different manifestations are affecting many Jewish communities.
