Ruth Weiss is a well-known journalist and writer who lives in Denmark and writes in both English and German. At 100 years of age celebrated on July 26, 2024, the author is preparing to publish a new book entitled "The Angel of Death of São Tomé" in Portuguese.
The book deals with the possible fate of the 2,000 Spanish Jewish children whose kidnapping was ordered by King John II in 1493. The children were sent by boat to populate the distant island of São Tomé, along with slaves and convicts.
Ruth Weiss’ connection with Portugal begins in her blood. His ancestors migrated to Ghent in 1500 and then to Aurich, from where they continued to Fürth.
In his new novel, Weiss addresses the history of Jews in São Thomé up to the present day. The manuscript is available in German and English. It will soon also be available in Portuguese, sponsored by the Jewish community of Oporto.
2025 promises to be an important year to put São Tomé on the world map. The Hispano-Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community of Oporto have just announced the premiere in May of a film on the subject of the unfortunate kidnapped children.
