Jewish Community of Oporto receives representatives of the main faiths in Oporto

On Tuesday , 28 May, the Jewish Community of Oporto received representatives of the Oporto Committee for Interfaith Dialogue for a visit to its premises, followed by a meeting and a kosher dinner.

Those present included Father Jardim Moreira and Sofia Salgado, of the Catholic Church, Abdul Mangá and Jaime Soares, of Oporto Islamic Cultural Centre, Rui Silva, of the Oporto Hare Krishna Community, and Fernando Lima, of the Oporto Buddhist Community.

The group were given a tour of the Synagogue and the Jewish Museum by Michael Rothwell, museum director and member of the interfaith group, the vice-president of the Jewish Community of Oporto, Isabel Ferreira Lopes, and the curator Hugo Vaz.

Following the visit and the meeting, participants were welcomed to the synagogue library where they were served a kosher dinner, with traditional dishes of Jewish cuisine.

The interfaith group started in March 2023, on the initiative of the Catholic Church. It meets once a month to discuss matters of common interest among the various faiths. In March of this year, the group was received at Oporto Diocese by Bishop Dom Manuel Linda to sign a letter of principles.
