The Day of Shame, 2025
A menorah was displayed today in the garden of the great synagogue Kadoorie Mekor Haim. For the third consecutive year, the central Jewish synagogue in Oporto remembered the day when it was illegally invaded by Lisbon authorities waving anonymous letters.
This is the ridiculous but significant personification of what happened in the great synagogue in Oporto on March 11, 2022. "Hello, is Patrick Drahi here? We have some anonymous letters that talk about 'large sums of money for leaders' and 'corruption in the registry offices by the rabbi'. Your Holocaust museum is receiving a lot of children, thanks to Abramovich's 250 euros. We don't know where these letters came from, perhaps from a mental hospital, but the government and the political press want this 'democratic scrutiny' and we have traveled a long way to visit you all".
The same authorities published a public statement saying that they were investigating something big. However, the police operation was a fiasco.
The Day of Shame, 2024
In that fateful month, the Community was only supported by Israeli President Isaac Herzog, the European Jewish Association and the Jewish News Syndicate. Someone then said, "Let this wave pass, don't say anything, let them act freely and without fear, so we can follow and document what they are busy doing."
The Community states there was a case of serious State corruption, with total abuse of institutions and a mixture of political, judicial and media powers, with the aim of eliminating the most significant Jewish entities in Portugal, and the Sephardic law of return.
The profound contempt that was shown to higher culture, the promotion of Jewish life and Jewish success has become evident, as has the lack of honesty of countless people and institutions. The mediocrity, the envy, the backbiting, the vanity, the cruelty of trampling on those who are fallen, the desire that the successful be defeated, all this took place.
The Day of Shame, 2023
Those who promoted the fake news and the illegal searches and seizures knew that they would become public knowledge and would provoke hatred and discrimination against the Jewish Community of Oporto for a long time. That is exactly what happened, with lists of Jewish businessmen published in the newspapers, antisemitic posters appearing at demonstrations for better housing, and thousands of hate messages, using words such as “Mafia organisation”, "corruption", "gang of sell-outs", "they’re into schemes", "these people were never trustworthy", "history speaks for itself", "even religion", "a Jew would rather lose a friend than one euro", "Weren’t the Jews always like that?", "chased away from everywhere", “the Rabbi is corrupt”, "it stretches from the Rabbi to the owners of Chelsea and Altice", "they are what they’ve always been, criminals", "even the creation of Israel is based on the same imaginary assumption that they are entitled to the land”, "Israel has carte blanche to do what it wants in Palestine", "it’s always confused me that a Portuguese community should adopt as its name that of a foreign, Israeli community".
To this day, no apology has been presented by the Portuguese state, to the disgrace of the name of Justice and above all of Portugal.
