Stories of moral courage come to life in ‘The Righteous’, an exhibition in Porto this November

"The Righteous" shows stories of Christians and Muslims who saved Jews from Nazism.

A new and engaging exhibition titled The Righteous will open on Thursday, 20 November, at Clube Fenianos in Porto, inviting visitors to reflect on extraordinary acts of moral courage during one of history’s darkest chapters.

The exhibition is part of the Música no Porto Project”, which includes concerts by the UK-based group Taybelekh, presenting Jewish songs from Eastern Europe and, for the first time in Porto, introducing klezmer dancing.

The exhibition tells the stories of Christians and Muslims who risked their lives – and the lives of their loved ones – to save Jews from Nazi persecution. These individuals defied hatred with humanity, offering shelter, forged documents, and escape routes, at immense personal cost.

Highlighted stories include those of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese consul who issued thousands of visas against government orders, and Noor Inayat Khan, a Muslim resistance fighter in Nazi-occupied France. Their legacies remind us that moral courage transcends faith, nationality, and circumstance.

The exhibition takes place alongside a concert of Yiddish and Ladino songs with lively klezmer dancing.

David Hayes, exhibition curator and project organizer, says: “The exhibition is also part of a broader educational initiative to promote community cohesion, ethical reflection, interfaith solidarity as well as Holocaust awareness. It is accompanied by the multi-lingual website, which features additional resources for students and teachers related to the Portuguese National Curriculum.”

Tickets for the exhibition and concert cost €10 and will be on sale from 7 September.

All proceeds will be donated to the Holocaust Museum of Oporto.
