30th anniversary of the Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty: a historic achievement that ended decades of conflict

This week marks the 30th anniversary of the Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty: a landmark achievement that ended decades of conflict and laid the groundwork for cooperation in the Middle East. This agreement established formal recognition, defined clear borders, and paved the way for trade, tourism, and essential resource-sharing initiatives, such as joint water projects.

However, despite diplomatic ties, challenges remain. Local attitudes in Jordan towards Israel are often strained, with many Jordanians holding longstanding views that complicate people-to-people relationships and cultural exchange. Much like Israel’s treaty with Egypt, the peace can feel somewhat ‘cold,’ marked by formal cooperation but limited social connection.

Still, both countries continue to benefit from this enduring peace. Security collaboration, shared environmental projects, and tourism persist, proving that despite obstacles, this peace remains impactful. As we commemorate three decades, we reflect on these achievements and the ongoing journey towards understanding and cooperation across the region.
