In the United States, the elites represent the population and the country has never ceased to recognize the nation's founders, including the Portuguese and Polish Haim Salomon. The American Jewish community that financed that great national design. It is still highly respected today.
In turn, the current elites in Portugal apparently do not represent the population and have no respect for Catholics, and for Jews of Portuguese origin, ie, the founders of the nation in 1143. What is happening in Portugal? The PJN spoke with Gabriel Senderowicz, president of the Jewish Community of Oporto.
PJN - How do you see the state of the country and the future of the Jews in Portugal?
GS - These are two issues linked to each other. Portugal is a beautiful and safe country with an incredible history, magnificent monuments, and an admirable botany. Its population of Catholic culture is peaceful and extremely kind and welcoming to foreigners who arrive in peace and with a desire to work. There are problems too. The nation has not enough population, territory and wealth, and no one today speaks of Yaish ben Yahia and his lineage, who with the Catholic kings built a scientific and military Empire. Who defends the Jewish community when it is attacked today? Nobody. Months ago there was an attempt to poison Israelites at a festival. The silence reigns.
PJN - A newspaper has just reported that Portugal is the "economy of the year". How do you comment?
GS - Portugal has serious challenges. Some people often speak as if the country’s national history began 50 years ago, when communists and socialists “brought paradise”. Likewise, it is believed that for 850 years everything was a shame: the scientific empire, the economic empire, the Treaty of Tordesillas — everything that should make Portuguese people proud.
PJN - Who talks about paradise?
GS – Mostly politicians linked to the “Palestinian question”, people in university circles, corrupt newspapers that are always ready to do political favors, and also some members of the Justice system.
PJN - Could the vast riches of the Portuguese sea not be the answer to the advent of a promising future?
GS - These are the great national riches that tools such as the astrolabe and Abraham Zacuto’s astronomical charts once made possible to explore. The most distinguished member of our community has been working for decades in the energy sector using water sources across Asia. He would have been the right man in the right place to invest in the Portuguese sea and in the expansion of the continental shelf.
PJN - Why "would have been"? How is this project going?
GS - To that project the Portuguese system responded with ferocity, trying to tarnish the image of our benefactor, who is the grandson of Laura Lombroso de Matos Mocatta, that is, he is the first guardian of the Kadoorie Mekor Haim synagogue financed a century ago by his father Lord Lawrence and his grandfather Sir Elly, in honor of Laura.
PJN - Why all this?
GS - Mocatta's family, the Jewish temple built in her name, the current Jewish life, everything that has to do with the history of Portugal is hated by the various socialist parties and newspapers that pollute the whole of Portuguese social life. In the same way, Israel, its millennial symbols, its tradition, its citizens, everything that has to do with the Jewish state is hated by socialists incapable of liking the fact that Jews of Portuguese origin are prominent figures in all the great nations of the current world. Note that I say all, not just some.
PJN - Is the "Palestinian question" of the former socialist government still standing?
GS - Without a doubt. Portugal has already recognized the “state of Hamas”, even with an embassy where the laws of the terrorist movement apply. It was funny to see their discomfort with the Sephardic origins of the Hamas hostages. It is also funny to see their discomfort when they realize that our synagogues and museums are full of life. They don’t like it, but it is our duty to tell the history.
PJN - What will the community do?
GS - Stay tuned. The world is always on the move. Centuries from now, those corrupt names will be part of a gallery. It is what they deserve, along with the criminals they used: robbers, saboteurs, murderers, and madmen from the psychiatric hospital. They tried to destroy the community and failed. Now they will all be embracing each other in the cemetery of history. Good luck.
