Online event marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day with literary discussion

On 27 January at 6 pm, an online event commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day will take place, bringing together scholars and members of the public interested in history, literature, and memory. The initiative is organized by the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, in partnership with the Alberto Benveniste Chair.

The event will feature a roundtable discussion with the participation of Anne Bénoliel Defréville, author of Sefardim – The Epic of a Jewish Family over 3,000 Years.

The conversation will be moderated by Fernando Pancorbo Murillo and Susana Bastos Mateus and will be conducted primarily in French.

During the session, participants will explore a book that functions both as a documentary archive and as a profound reflection on silence and memory. In Sefardim, the author examines a Jewish identity that remained latent in her family history for decades.

By confronting historical documents and revisiting places that evoke her origins, Defréville brings to light a rich array of hidden and long-silenced narratives.

The event will be held online via Google Meet and is open to all those interested in the topic.
