The Embassy of Israel in Portugal marked the 77th anniversary of Israel’s Independence with a special celebration at the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue in Oporto. Hosted by Ambassador Oren Rozenblat and his wife, Riki Rozenblat, the gathering brought together around 150 guests in an atmosphere of joy and unity. Originally scheduled for May, the event was postponed due to instability in the Middle East but gained symbolic meaning by taking place at this time of year, a few days before Rosh Hashanah.

The ceremony opened with the national anthems of Israel and Portugal, performed by the Mekor Haim Choir in a moment that deeply moved the audience. In his address, the ambassador highlighted Israel’s contributions to the world in diverse fields, while also recalling the pain of the hostages still held in Gaza and the urgency of their return. In a deeply personal tribute, he honored his cousin, Sarita Mendelson, one of six victims of the terrorist attack that struck Jerusalem on September 8 of this year.
