On the evening of August 17, around 50 Brazilian community activists took part in the launch of the documentary “2,000 Kidnapped Jewish Children”. The event was organized in partnership between the Jewish Community of Porto and the International Zionist Organization of Jewish Women of Rio Grande do Sul (WIZO RS).
The online conference began with the screening of the 30-minute film, followed by a debate with three guest speakers. Journalist and president of B’nai B’rith Portugal, Gabriela Cantergi, highlighted the reasons behind the production and emphasized the role of the Jewish Community of Porto’s cultural initiatives in combating antisemitism.
Next, historian Ilton Gitz provided a historical analysis of the expulsion of Jews from the Iberian Peninsula, drawing parallels with the October 7 massacre. Sociologist Matheus Alexandre then offered reflections on modern antisemitism and anti-Zionism, central themes of his academic research.
This marked the second collaboration between the Jewish Community of Porto and WIZO RS in promoting historical films. In May 2023, both institutions had held a similar debate with the screening of the documentary “1506: The Genocide in Lisbon”.
