Book launch in Monforte highlights the legacy of the Crypto-Jews in the region

On May 10, the historic village of Monforte hosted the launch of historian Jorge Martins’ latest work: The Crypto-Jews of Monforte. Martins is a nationally recognized expert in Portuguese Judaism and the Inquisition. With over two decades of research dedicated to the subject, he has published an extensive body of work on New Christians and Jewish communities persecuted in Portugal.

Published by Âncora Editora, this new book adds to the author’s prolific catalogue, which includes titles such as Portugal and the Jews, Maria Gomes, New Christian, 117 Years Old, and The Pessoas in the Inquisition.

The event reflected the growing public interest in exploring the Jewish roots of inland Portugal and Monforte’s unique role in that historical narrative.
