Antisemitism in Portugal

When discussing antisemitism in Portugal, it is advisable to make an effort not to be ignorant.

Portugal is the country where the longest persecution of religious freedom the world has known, where for four centuries the Jews were absent, where the common citizen even today still unconsciously relates the words Jew and money, and where anti-Israel sentiment punctuates the actions of the political press.

Any debt? If not, we can continue.

The most significant antisemitic events that occurred in Portugal in 2024 included demonstrations for better housing that targeted local Jews, whose personal names were published in newspapers, bomb threats against the country’s largest synagogue and the Holocaust museum, called a “brothel that teaches the lie of the 6 million”, hate messages written on the facades of Jewish homes to identify “Zionist pigs”, and so on.

There is an aversion towards Jewish success. For instance, the Jewish Community founded by the Portuguese Dreyfus has managed to attract 20% of the country’s teenage population to its museums and cinemas. Yet, this work was always met with profound silence from politicians and political press. The diligent and effective work of Jews is often perceived as “discrimination” against other minorities. Jews are stereotyped as privileged plutocrats.

Any debt? If not, we can continue.

Three years ago, elites in Lisbon used all means to repeal a law in favor of the Jew and damage the strongest Jewish community in the country, its cultural and religious work, its leaders, its businessmen and its future. Not even in the Congo would a synagogue have been trampled on like that and people's freedom of conscience called into question in the twenty-first century. There was a murderous dance between rulers, journalists, commentators, communiqués from the prosecutor's office, police and convicted criminals.

There was an even more miserable detail. While trying to kill the target Jewish community, the killers caressed a less relevant community, so that there would be no accusations of antisemitism. That's the technique they used in the USSR. And since no one knows the history today, they fooled everyone.

Any debt? If not, we can conclude.

Many say that the situation in Portugal is great compared to France. It is false. There is no analysis of the real facts. There is no deep thought about the big picture.

The French Jewish and Muslim communities are 100 times larger than their Portuguese counterparts, so the number of incidents has to be much larger in terms of scale. It is possible to imagine Jewish life in France if the antisemitic incidents we saw above occurred in this country but multiplied by a hundred. A hundred demonstrations for better housing blaming the Jews for the crisis, a hundred articles in the newspapers with the names of Jews who work in real estate, a hundred bomb threats against the largest synagogues, a hundred bomb threats against Jewish museums, a hundred messages against "Zionist pigs" written on the door of their homes.

Moreover, never would the French political, judicial and press powers unite to slaughter the Jewish community in Paris or Marseille, much less with the use of night robbers, car saboteurs and anonymous letters from convicts.

I hope the reader is less ignorant after reading this article.
