The Israel Defense Forces said Monday that hostage Idan Shtivi was killed during Hamas’s October 7, 2023, onslaught in southern Israel, the announcement coming year to the day his body was kidnapped into Gaza, where it is still being held.

Idan, 28, was Israeli and Portuguese citizen. He is son of Dali Oron (Naftali Benveniste) of Bulgarian family origin. Family names present in the ancient communities of Bulgaria, Thessaloniki ("Kahal Kadosh Portugal", "Kahal Kadosh Lisbon", "Kahal Kadosh Évora"), İzmir ("Kahal Kadosh Portugal" and institution "Endow the Orphans"), Morocco, Tunisia, Hamburg, Livorno, and others.

The grim development, announced on the first anniversary of the unprecedented assault, was based on new intelligence findings, the military said. The IDF said it had informed Shtivi’s family on Sunday that the army had concluded that he was killed during the attack on the Nova music festival.

In the last year, his mother and brothers have been to Portugal three times asking for help from the Portuguese authorities to exert diplomatic pressure with a view to his release. The grim outcome of the case was yet another horror for the family to add to the first one.

The young man, an environmental science student, was kidnapped by Hamas terrorists while taking photos of his friends at the SuperNova festival. He even tried to call his girlfriend, Stav, to warn her about the emergency situation, but when he tried to leave the place with friends, he found himself surrounded by terrorists. The car was found completely riddled with high caliber bullets. His friends were killed. His body disappeared. Idan was later identified as a hostage, but the IDF said today that he died at the time and that his body was taken to Gaza.
