A Musical Journey from Israel to Portugal: The Shira Choir to sing in Porto in May

The Shira Choir 

The Shira Choir from Israel will present a series of three concerts in Portugal in May 2025. This is the second visit of the choir to Portugal, following their successful concert tour in 2010.

The Shira Choir is a women’s choral group that perfroms modern Israeli music, international folk songs, and liturgical works. Since 2022, it has been led by Mr. Tal Yigal, an accomplished choir conductor, pianist and vocalist. Weekly rehearsals take place on Monday evenings at Kfar Uriah, a small rural settlement near Jerusalem. Many members are retired and have worked in professions such as computer science, education, and administration. All have some musical training. A pianist accompanies rehearsals and performances.

The Choir has participated in international song festivals, both in Israel and in Europe and has gone on concert tours to England, Slovenia, Finland and Portugal. The repertoire includes Naomi Shemer’s Jerusalem of Gold (Hebrew), Bialik’s Sabbath Queen (Hebrew). Faure’s Requiem (Latin) Bob Chilcott’s Little Jazz Mass (Latin), Ariel Ramirez‘ Alfonsina y el Mar (Spanish), and Pablo Casals’ Nigra sum (Latin).

The Mekor Haim Choir

On Thursday, May 8, the choir will perform a program of modern Hebrew songs at the Clube de Fenianos in Porto at 18:30. Entry is free.

On Friday, May 9, the Shira Choir will perform together with the Mekor Haim Choir of Porto at the Holocaust Museum of Porto at 15:00. Entry to this concert is also free.

On Sunday, May 11 the choir will give a concert together with Caticus Camerae in Figueira da Foz.
