Video dedicated to billionaire Abramovich chosen as the best

Among the forty videos produced by the Porto Jewish Community and shown on YouTube are internationally awarded feature films, documentary films as important as "The Genocide of Lisbon", as well as videos about landmark events in the main Jewish institutions of the city of Porto – the Kadoorie synagogue, the Jewish and Holocaust museums. The choice of a video pertaining to a billionaire – especially a controversial one, who arouses as much passion as hatred – seems to be unusual. Yet, Gabriel Senderowicz, the President of the Community, thinks that the video about “Mr. Abel Benjamin Rocha da Leiva Leja Rosa Abramovich” recounts one of the most important historical episodes in the millennial history of the Jews in the city.

According to the President, the criterion that guided his choice was the dual historical interest of the video. "Firstly, the number of Portuguese names in the family of the person portrayed is impressive, as is the Soviet state’s theft from his family, and the subsequent recovery of the stolen fortune. Secondly, from what we have seen, the political system uses newspapers to slander people and institutions to bring them down, followed by the alarmed intervention of the justice system, which adds more absurdities to what has already happened, and finally the politicians who orchestrated the case through propaganda can sit comfortably in their luxury armchairs for 20 years, while they say 'to Justice what is Justice’s!'"

Political objective: to destroy a law

The Community has always claimed that, at the root of the destruction of the law that allowed Jews of Portuguese origin to claim Portuguese nationality, there was a "Palestinian question" from the socialist government, which did not want Jews and even less Israeli rich Jews. The "Abramovich case" brought together political, media, economic, and cultural institutions against the Community. Nobody, absolutely nobody, was afraid to shout, do, and write what they wanted.

While Portuguese society and the Portuguese State find all this normal, the Community has a very different opinion. The trafficking of favors between powers is illegal, immoral, and can be suicidal in some cases.

The case worsened when a poorly calculated police operation believed in the validity of the arguments the entire mainstream was using. Then, it was a complete disaster. Even Patrick Drahi's name appeared amidst so many failed searches.

If the State did not accept any opinion of the Community about a Jew, even if based on family names and prior certification by Chabad Lubavitch, everything would be simple: the registry office would issue an unfavorable opinion and/or the government would decide not to grant that specific nationality. Indeed, the legal criteria were clear in dividing the procedures for granting nationality into three parts: (i) the Community's opinion, yes or no, (ii) the Registry Office’s opinion, yes or no, (iii) the Government's decision, yes or no.

However, with the campaign it mounted, the government and the entire system accused the Community of "granting nationalities." This disastrous action involved prominent agents from all branches of the State. Time passed. The law was destroyed and at the same time the Hamas embassy in Portugal, also called the Embassy of the State of Palestine, was inaugurated. The "Palestinian question" won.

Videography is a form of culture that encompasses the production of videos and films, which are means of artistic expression, communication, and historical and cultural record. The Porto Jewish Community has produced forty videos in the last decade and a half. On YouTube, where the organization created an account, such videos were posted.
