Award-winning journalist Henrique Cymerman will launch his new book O Enigma de Israel - A History of the Jewish State in Lisbon next Tuesday, October 7. The event will be moderated by Ricardo Costa.
The book aims to help Portuguese readers understand the complexity of Israel beyond the urgent headlines that often dominate the media. The idea for the book arose in the wake of the tragic events of October 7, 2023, and the author chose to publish it exactly two years later, emphasizing the significance of this date in Israel's history and in its ongoing conflict with the Arab world.
To understand the present, the book combines international relations, politics, and current affairs with a strong historical component, covering not only Israel but also the history of the Jewish people.
Henrique Cymerman is SIC's correspondent in the Middle East, a professor at Reichman University of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy, and the founding president of the Israel-Gulf Countries Chamber of Commerce and Innovation. A candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work with Pope Francis, who named him his personal ambassador, Cymerman has covered the Middle East for over 30 years. He was born and raised in Porto, moved to Israel at the age of 16, and works in five languages.
