The Goethe Institute and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Lisbon marked the 80th anniversary of Germany’s liberation with a special session held on May 5 at the Goethe Institute in Lisbon.

The event featured the presentation of the book The Price of Escape: The Story of Two Jewish Families During the War by Dutch writer and journalist Loes Gompes, as well as a screening of the documentary Lisbon, Harbour of Freedom, by filmmaker Anita Mizrahi, inspired by the book. The session was moderated by Dr. Patrícia Couto, researcher at the Center for Comparative Studies and translator.

The book recounts the stories of Dutch Jewish families who fled Nazi persecution during World War II and found temporary refuge in Portugal while seeking safer destinations.
