Several graves in the Jewish section of the Les Corts Cemetery were vandalized last Saturday, January 24. The incident was reported to the Jewish Community of Barcelona (CJB) by the Barcelona Cemeteries authority.

In response, the city’s Jewish community gathered the necessary information in order to accurately assess the damage, make appropriate decisions, and formally file complaints with the competent authorities.

The Rabbinate was also promptly informed and is working in close cooperation with the Hevra Kadisha to define and implement the necessary measures for repairing the damage as swiftly as possible, always in accordance with Jewish tradition and Halacha.

In a statement, the Jewish Community of Barcelona recalled a teaching from the Talmud: “Whoever honors the dead also honors the living” (Berachot 18a), emphasizing the collective responsibility to preserve respect and dignity, even — and especially — in the most difficult moments.
