Jewish hostages held by Arab terrorists at Entebbe Airport, Uganda, were rescued by Israeli commando units in 1976. Israeli commandos rescued over 100 hostages in a daring midnight raid after an eight-hour flight from Israel.
Four military planes landed at Entebbe, and within minutes the commandos stormed the old terminal, fighting the terrorists.
During the battle, Lt. Col. Jonathan Netanyahu, the rescue force commander, was killed, along with three hostages: Jean-Jacques Maimoni, Ida Borovits, and Pasco Cohen. A fourth hostage, Dora Bloch, who was hospitalized in Kampala, was executed the next day.
Israel renamed the mission “Operation Jonathan” to honor the fallen commander.
