A restaurant closed due to antisemitism

It served as a cultural and gastronomic space that brought together diverse people. Hatred, a serious and worrying reflection of the climate surrounding Jewish and Israeli life in Europe, closed its doors on January 10th, after a decade of operation in Bairro Alto, Lisbon. Reservations were essential because the restaurant was always full. The delicious and exceptionally presented food, the service, and the atmosphere were reasons why it was immensely popular. The news of the closure of a restaurant with an elegant Mediterranean menu was announced by the owners due to the "alarming increase in antisemitism in the world." That's it. People with brainless minds painted the walls adjacent to the restaurant with antisemitic phrases. Some wicked people sat there not to eat**,** but to shout words against Israel. Since the IDF responded to the heinous attack of October 7, 2023, Tantura has received continuous antisemitic attacks, harassment, and intimidation. There were repeated graffiti, online defamation, hostile campaigns, and calls for a boycott. These actions went beyond political expression, creating an environment of constant pressure and fear that ultimately made it impossible for the restaurant to continue operating. When antisemitism manifests itself in a way that silences livelihoods and erases the Jewish presence from public life, this evil must be recognized for what it is: discrimination with real and harmful consequences. We urge local and national authorities to take these incidents seriously and ensure that Jewish individuals and institutions can live, work, and express their identity freely and safely. Antisemitism, whether expressed through vandalism, intimidation, or organized campaigns, must never have a place in Europe or the world and must be confronted decisively.

Antisemitism does exist, unfortunately. The restaurant owners, Elad Budenshtiin and Itamar Eliyahu, always present themselves as two Israeli-Portuguese who fell so much in love with Portugal that they decided to live here and do what they do best: transform ingredients into delicacies. For the Portuguese state, this is not enough. The question is pertinent: what is the purpose of the appointment of João Taborda da Gama as national coordinator of the European Strategy to Combat Antisemitism, after all?
