Antisemitism in Madrid: Elderly Israeli women expelled from the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía after antisemitic harassment by visitors

Three elderly Israeli tourists — one of them a Holocaust survivor — were removed from the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid last Sunday, February 15, following an episode of antisemitic harassment by other visitors.

The women were wearing Jewish symbols and carrying a flag of Israel. According to reports, several people in the museum began shouting “genocide” and “baby killers” at the tourists.

Witnesses said that instead of ensuring the visitors’ safety in the face of the insults, museum staff asked the three women to leave the premises. The incident was recorded on video by a Spanish woman who was accompanying them during the visit.

The Head of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires at the Israeli Embassy in Spain, Dana Erlich, stated that the Israeli flag should not be viewed as a provocation. “The Israeli flag is not an act of provocation, but represents thousands of years of Jewish history,” she said.

As of now, the museum has not issued a detailed official statement regarding the incident.
