The Portuguese government has expressed concern over the escalating tensions in the Middle East, stating that it is closely monitoring developments in coordination with European partners, countries in the region, and NATO allies.
In an official statement, the government said Portugal’s diplomatic network is fully mobilized to support and protect Portuguese citizens, advising those currently in the region to remain in safe locations and avoid unnecessary travel. In light of the deteriorating security situation, Portugal has also advised against travel to the Middle East.
Lisbon also condemned the attacks attributed to Iran against neighboring countries, reiterating international concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear program and the human rights situation in the country.
At the same time, Israeli airlines are preparing repatriation operations for their citizens. According to the Jewish News Syndicate, around 100,000 Israelis remain stranded abroad since the outbreak of hostilities, while approximately 33,000 foreign tourists are currently in Israel.
On Monday, Israeli airline El Al confirmed that commercial flights scheduled until Wednesday, March 4, have been cancelled, adding that the company is preparing a special operation to bring Israeli citizens back home once Ben Gurion Airport reopens.
