Mossad Enhances Defense of the Jewish State and Diaspora Communities

Attacked by a vast array of enemy armies hours after its founding in 1948, events that were repeated in the following decades and until today, the state of Israel has never abandoned its founding principles, which oblige it to also defend the Jewish communities of the diaspora when they face attacks from any adversary that may endanger local Jewish life.

The Israeli government has increasingly adopted an "unapologetic" stance on fighting global antisemitism, viewing the defense of the Diaspora as an inseparable, existential mission, focusing on intelligence dominance and operational freedom.

Bitzur is the specialized unit within the Mossad that is responsible for protecting Jewish communities and institutions worldwide. It acts as a "long arm" for the Israeli security establishment. Due to the sensitive nature of these operations, Bitzur's work often involves navigating delicate issues regarding interference in foreign domestic affairs, relying on close, covert cooperation with similar international partners. Their primary function is to monitor threats against Jews worldwide and organize their defense.

While Bitzur focuses on creating protection networks and infrastructure that ensure Jewish communities are not left vulnerable to external attacks, Kidon and Metsada are key components of Mossad's operational arm, integrated through a special operations hierarchy that separates intelligence gathering from direct action.

Metsada is the "direct action" division that functions as Mossad's paramilitary arm. It is responsible for sabotage missions, psychological warfare, and paramilitary operations in enemy territory. Kidon is the elite subunit specifically focused on targeted executions of people who represent a danger to the Jewish community and the society.

What if the threat comes from the states themselves?

The situation is almost unthinkable in the 21st century, yet theoretically possible, due to the Muslim Brotherhood's sponsorships aimed at creating states that serve its long-term interests.

Modern states are obligated by domestic and international law to respect local Jewish life and guarantee the physical safety of Jewish communities. Jewish life encompasses diverse and complementary realities, such as religion, culture, education, and the promotion of human rights.

It is unthinkable that Jewish communities should be unprotected by the state, especially because, if a terrorist attack against a community were to occur, the state in whose territory the attack takes place would inevitably be accused of being primarily responsible.

On the other hand, real antisemitic acts, such as attempts to poison israelis in music festivals, the publication of lists of Jews in newspapers, state-sponsored schemes of anonymous and slanderous denunciations against the Jewish community, nighttime robberies, car sabotage, attempted murder, and so on, cannot fail to be condemned politically, in the media, and judicially. What characterized the infamous Nazi and communist regimes was the silencing and even promotion of practices such as those mentioned above, aggravated by the fact that journalists, police, and the judicial apparatus were often unleashed upon the very communities targeted.

The principle of separation of powers and freedom of association are crucial factors for the effective existence of Jewish life. Interference by any of these state powers—or even all simultaneously—in how religious communities self-govern or qualify their members, and even the attempt to discredit the religious and cultural work produced by Jewish organizations, is a state exercise not only destined to fail miserably but which may even imply a tendency toward suicide.

For the Israeli security apparatus intended to protect the Jewish diaspora, information gathering is generally very simple when targeting states and not traditional terrorist movements. Given that, as a rule, Jewish communities in each country depend on only a few people, at most a handful of local Jews, and that it is always the leaders of these groups that the persecution system targets indiscriminately, the apparent ease with which the hunt for isolated targets is carried out generates excessive confidence on the part of the perpetrators, resulting in an absolute lack of precaution.

If the described scenario is confirmed by Israeli intelligence – the state persecution and the sponsorship by the Muslim Brotherhood – then the situation changes to the designation of terrorism, a label that is applied to this organization in the state of Israel. The political chess game of the Jewish state will then dictate the forms of reaction and their respective timings.

The Zionist movement created a secure, sovereign Jewish state where Jews would no longer be a vulnerable minority everywhere.
