Yesterday, Sunday, September 21, in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, dozens gathered at a demonstration organized by the Luso-Portuguese Association for Israel. Participants protested against Portugal’s decision to support the creation of a State following the October 7 attacks, calling the measure a “derailment of civilization”.

The event opened with Ruben Melo performing “Havenu Shalom Aleichem.” ALPI President Madalena Barata warned that Portugal, at the 80th UN General Assembly, “must not give in to promises of seats at the United Nations.”

Messages of support for Israel were expressed by Samuel Esteves, Fernando Loja, Darinde Van Dam, and Nelson Bensabat. Rabbi Ruben Suiza moved the crowd with a prayer for the hostages. The event closed with the national anthems of Israel and Portugal, sung together as a symbol of unity.
“Israel will never be alone” was the phrase that resonated throughout the demonstration.
