Hearing Major General Agostinho Costa, a commentator for CNN Portugal, call Benjamin Netanyahu a "mythomaniac" requires some reflection, without calling into question the quality of the person in the analysis of military issues. Mythomania presupposes a pattern of making false statements, even with true elements in between, with or without awareness of the motivations behind the lies, which tend to present the liar as a very good, wise or well-informed man.
The massacre of October 7, that fanatical hatred, that unrestrained joy in the slaughter of Jews and their suffering, had all the elements of the genocides that have victimized the people of Israel over the centuries. It was not intellectually honest for Agostinho Costa to describe the massacre as an "act of resistance", much less to claim that "the IDF killed the bulk of the victims", while taking as reliable any number or fact revealed by Hamas.
To deny the quality of Israel's intelligence services because they did not anticipate October 7 is to forget that at the same day many other services were caught off guard as well, from the American to the English, to the French and the Russian.
To deny the quality of IDF soldiers because they did not entirely eliminate their opponents and their political ideas in hostile territories until today is to forget what happened in Vietnam and Ukraine that faced the most powerful armies on Earth.
To deny that Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran and Iranian forces in Syria have been seriously weakened and dismantled is simply to ignore the reality of the facts. Israel's actions were politically aimed at preventing a repeat of another October 7. At least for now, that objective has been more than fulfilled.
It is not honest to reduce the Israeli Government's objectives to the release of hostages and the extinction of Hamas, regardless of the government's political discourse, which could not be different towards the Israeli population. Much less is it correct to say that Israel "lost the war", because it did not fulfill these two objectives, given that no nation can exterminate a political idea and free two hundred hostages scattered in tunnels, and always on the move, in another country.
The Major General's bias against Israel is ideological. For him it is normal to call the Israeli government "extreme right-wing", to place Zionism as the great evil of the world, to paint it in the colors of Nazism, and to describe the Zionists (that is, 99% of the Jews) with the same qualifiers that Hitler gave to the Jews.
The "West", so detested, as if it had nothing good at all, is always referred to and denigrated by the Major General when he opines about Israel. It turns out that Israel is strictly neither West nor East in terms of values. Israel fights for its own interests and has direct lines of communication with the great empires of the world, which in turn have many important Jewish fellow citizens. We shall say no more on this last point. There are many things that come out of the military sphere. Agostinho Costa does not deserve to know them.
His bias against Israel and the Jewish people is scandalous, to the point that it can be said that the person in question does not have the moral conditions and independence to make any political comment on anything that concerns the Jewish state.
